These closures are part of a total of 68 stores that the company will close this year as part of a program aimed at saving the business. The program was approved by the High Court last month, allowing Poundland to avoid bankruptcy just days before the company could have run out of funds.

This discounter, employing 14,700 workers and having 800 stores, has faced financial difficulties in recent years. The new owners, Gordon Brothers, who acquired the chain for £1 in June, plan to invest £90 million to save the business.

List of closed stores

Here is the full list of the six stores that will close on September 28:

  • West Street, Havant, Hampshire
  • High Street, Newport, Shropshire
  • Dumbarton Road, Glasgow
  • Church Street, Ripley, Derbyshire
  • Swanley Shopping Centre, London Road, Swanley, Kent
  • Dovefield Retail Park, Town Meadows Way, Uttoxeter

The restructuring plan for Poundland includes closing 68 stores, laying off 1,000 workers, and also shutting down two warehouses, affecting 350 people. From September 16, customers will no longer be able to purchase goods on the Poundland website, as it will transition to a viewing-only format.

The chain will also terminate its loyalty program from the same date.

Customers registered on the Poundland Perks app have until January 15, 2026, to use their reward vouchers.

Additionally, the chain has announced its intention to increase the number of products sold for £1. As part of these changes, the discount store will implement a pricing policy for products at £1, £2, £3 in all stores this month.

Poundland has already announced the closure of 58 of its 68 stores this year.

The situation surrounding the Poundland chain indicates significant changes in retail, where companies are facing numerous challenges. A significant reduction has been announced that will affect thousands of employees. The prospect of investments from new owners may provide some stability, but the company's further steps will remain under close scrutiny from consumers and business experts.
