Poundland closes six stores: which cities are affected by the closures

According to The Sun: Today, the Poundland store network closes six of its branches, which will be a serious blow to shoppers.

The closures will affect stores in Havant, Newport, Ripley, Swanley, Uttoxeter, and Partick, and this process is final.

Additionally, it is known that two more stores will close: in Market Harborough on October 9 and in Carlisle on November 9.

These closures are part of a major reorganization aimed at preserving the network. In August, the plan was approved by the High Court, saving the company from bankruptcy amid financial difficulties.

At the start of the restructuring, Poundland had 800 stores, but now they plan to keep between 650 and 700.

The network, which employs 14,700 staff, has been under financial pressure in recent years. Its new owner, Gordon Brothers, purchased the brand for 1 pound in June and announced a £90 million investment to revive the business.

The reorganization plan includes closing 68 stores, cutting 1,000 jobs, and shuttering two warehouses, which will affect 350 employees.

Also, as part of the changes, there will be reduced rent payments in 180 stores and the closure of the website.

However, earlier this week, it was revealed that 11 previously planned closures will remain open.

Among them are stores in Irvine (Rivergate Centre), Brighton (London Road), Anniesland (Great Western Road), and Whitby.

Overall, 67 stores are planned to be closed, with six of them in the coming days.

Poundland has launched major sales in several stores, where discounts reach up to 90%.

These changes highlight the company’s aim to return to basics and expand the range of products available for 1 pound. New prices are being gradually introduced in all Poundland stores across the UK this month.

Already, 60% of products in stores cost 1 pound, 20% cost 2 pounds, and another 20% cost 3 pounds.

The closure of six Poundland stores and planned changes are part of a wider strategy to cut costs and optimize the network. This will significantly impact consumers who have grown accustomed to affordable prices and a wide range of products in these stores. Any further reduction in the number of sales points could affect the brand's competitiveness in a highly competitive retail market.
