Belgian Prime Minister Says Zelensky Should Lead Europe in Talks with Russia.
Statement from Belgium’s Prime Minister
According to UATV: On June 19, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever declared that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ought to represent Europe in negotiations with Russia, backed by other European Union nations and the United Kingdom. De Wever made this announcement, emphasizing Zelensky’s central role.
Discussions on Cooperation and Energy Security
De Wever noted that talks about collaboration and energy security took place during a meeting between Zelensky and Bulgarian President Rumen Radev. The prime minister added that he had spoken with Zelensky, who appears eager to bring major European countries into the negotiation process.
'I spoke with Volodymyr Zelensky, and I believe he would like major European nations to join him,' De Wever stated.
He further pointed out that these nations are part of the so-called 'coalition of the willing,' representing large powers. However, De Wever expressed skepticism about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s readiness for meaningful talks, remarking:
'I doubt many colleagues think that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is prepared to start serious negotiations today.'
As a result, Europe’s stance in negotiations with Russia could be channeled through Zelensky, with support from other European countries and the UK.
This statement underscores the diplomatic backing Ukraine receives from European states amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Zelensky’s potential role as Europe’s negotiator signals a push for greater EU unity on security and cooperation, especially given rising threats from Russia. De Wever’s comments may also hint at a shift in Europe’s conflict-resolution strategy toward a more assertive international position.
