Court Rejects Poroshenko’s Lawsuit Against Zelenskyy; Full Ruling Due in Five Days.
Court Ruling on Petro Poroshenko’s Lawsuit
According to Espreso.tv: A Ukrainian court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by former President Petro Poroshenko, with the full written decision set to be released in five days. The ruling was accompanied by two separate judicial opinions. This legal action stemmed from sanctions imposed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February 2025, which targeted Poroshenko among others.
Timeline of the Legal Proceedings
A preliminary hearing took place on June 30, 2025, to examine Poroshenko’s complaint. In response to the National Security and Defense Council’s sanctions decision, lawmakers from Poroshenko’s European Solidarity party blocked the parliament’s podium on February 13 and 14, 2025. Separately, on February 14, 2025, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced it was overseeing criminal proceedings involving businessmen and former senior officials.
The Cassation Administrative Court began reviewing Poroshenko’s challenge to the sanctions on April 17, 2025. After the verdict was announced, Iryna Herashchenko, a representative of European Solidarity, stated:
“The judges announced the rejection of Poroshenko’s lawsuit against Zelenskyy.” — Iryna Herashchenko
She further claimed that “Zelenskyy knew about this decision in advance.”
Additionally, Poroshenko’s lawyer, Illia Novikov, argued that “the NSDC decision on sanctions against Petro Poroshenko was allegedly falsified,” highlighting the deep tensions between the parties. “Obviously, this disgraceful decision will be appealed,” Herashchenko added. As a result, the situation surrounding the sanctions imposed on Poroshenko remains tense and requires further judicial review.
The Poroshenko case underscores the complexity of legal and political dynamics in Ukraine, where sanctions can have serious implications for political figures and their business interests. His lawsuit marked a significant chapter in the ongoing conflict between the former president and the current head of state, reflecting broader political divisions within the country.
