Serbia's goalkeeper conceded a goal from his own half: a 50-meter shot.
Controversial goal in World Cup qualifiers
According to The Sun: Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic became the hero of a comical moment when he was beaten from the distance of the center circle during an important qualifying match for Serbia against Andorra.
In the 17th minute, Andorra's forward Guillem Lopez intercepted a poor pass from Serbia's midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic and found the net from 35 yards out.
Lopez
then had the presence of mind to strike the ball, sending it over the helplessPetrovic, who was far away from his own goal.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper tried to jump back but couldn't stop the ball from hitting the net.
However,
Serbiaquickly responded with an own goal from Cristian Garcia and took the lead with a goal from Dusan Vlahovic in the 54th minute.
Both teams are playing in England's Group K, where Serbia is in third place, outside the playoff zone, while Andorra sits at the bottom of the table.
Petrovic, who joined Bournemouth in July, has already played all seven matches for the team under Andoni Iraola.
Before transferring to Bournemouth, Petrovic was not included in Chelsea's squad for the World Cup in June when he moved for 25 million pounds.
He replaced his former teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga, who moved to Arsenal for 5 million pounds this summer.
Petrovic became a national hero after saving a penalty in the qualifying match against Albania, a match that took place under political and historical tension.
The Serbian, who joined Chelsea from New England Revolution for 14 million pounds in 2023, spent last season on loan at French club Strasbourg, where he was named Player of the Season, helping the team secure seventh place in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Conference League.
This comical episode became the subject of jokes on social media, although for Petrovic it was an awkward situation in his career. Nevertheless, this moment may add motivation for him in upcoming matches to prove his worth on the field.
