Alan Shearer criticizes VAR: why Fulham's goal was canceled in the match against Chelsea.
VAR Criticism from Alan Shearer
According to The Sun: Alan Shearer expressed his outrage regarding the VAR's operation after the controversial decision in the match between Chelsea and Fulham.
During the game that took place on Saturday, Fulham managed to level the score in the 22nd minute with a goal from Josh King. However, VAR canceled this goal due to an alleged rule violation by Rodrigo Muniz, who, according to VAR, made contact with a Chelsea player.
AlamyFulham's goal was canceled, and Chelsea won the match 2-0 thanks to goals from Joao Pedro and a penalty from Enzo Fernandez.
This decision caused outrage at Fulham, and PGMOL acknowledged that VAR made a mistake by canceling the goal.
Shearer, commenting on the situation on the podcast 'The Rest Is Football', expressed his dissatisfaction with the leading referees of the Premier League, questioning:
“Please tell me, how could two professional referees in the VAR room come to such a decision when the on-field referee clearly did not consider it a foul?”
He also noted that the situation looks absurd and addressed Howard Webb asking for an explanation of why the rules changed.
“How many times do you need to review the same thing to achieve clarity in obvious situations?”
Fulham's head coach Marco Silva also commented on this, calling the cancellation of the goal 'incredible' and emphasizing that VAR should not re-referee matches.
'It is incredible that a goal was canceled due to such decisions.'
Shearer emphasized that such mistakes negatively impact the reputation of the game and cause outrage among players, fans, and coaches.
