According to The Sun: Father Lewis Moody proudly watched as his son Dylan saved a penalty for England – just a few days after he himself announced his diagnosis of motor neuron disease.

Former England rugby star openly shared the news about his health this week.

47-year-old Moody was in tears during an interview with the BBC, talking about how medical tests confirmed the diagnosis of motor neuron disease.

The 2003 Rugby World Cup winner and former England captain gave the interview alongside his wife Annie. The couple, who married in June 2006, are raising two sons.

Dylan, a new international athlete

One of them is Dylan, who is choosing a career in a different sport than his father. The 17-year-old is a goalkeeper who signed his first professional contract with Southampton in July. He is also part of the youth team 'Lions', where he made his debut in an under-18 match in September.

Dylan came on as a substitute in a 1-0 victory against France at St George’s Park, replacing Owen Asemota after 63 minutes of play. His father watched as he maintained his goalkeeping record until Matthew Upson's son Elijah scored a dramatic goal in the 96th minute.

Impressive penalty save

It appears that the teams were practicing penalties as part of their preparation for the under-17 World Cup, which the team aims to participate in after last qualification.

But Moody made his mark by saving the penalty, diving to the left.

Senior Moody shared two heartfelt posts about Dylan on Instagram. The first was a video of the penalty save, captioned: “Amazing night watching this great legend.” The second was a photo of father and son smiling together, with Dylan, who has not lost any of the four Premier League 2 matches this season, still in his green goalkeeper kit.

Moody wrote: “An amazing night at St George’s Park, watching the England U18 team and this little warrior @dylanmoody.1.” The post sparked various comments from fans and followers.

“We sat on the sofa in tears, Ethan and Dylan embraced each other, then the dog jumped up and started licking the tears from our faces, which was quite funny,” Moody said about how they informed their teenagers about the sad news.

He also noted that despite the diagnosis, he feels quite well and hopes that this will last as long as possible. 'I don’t feel ill. The symptoms are very minor...'
