Europe Rejects Schröder as Negotiator After Secret Putin Meeting.
Putin Meets Schröder Behind Closed Doors
According to UATV: Russian President Vladimir Putin held a confidential meeting with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, during which they discussed the possibility of Schröder acting as a European intermediary in talks with Russia. However, European nations consider Schröder an unacceptable candidate, largely due to his damaged reputation from close ties to the Russian energy sector. This development comes amid ongoing European discussions on how to maintain pressure on Moscow given the current political climate.
Europe's Stance and Upcoming Summit
Schröder had previously been floated as a potential European representative for negotiations with Russia. Yet experts note that European leaders have clearly articulated their position that Schröder is not a viable option.
“This means Putin has started to bargain.”
Oleksandr Leonov
Leonov also emphasizes that “when Europe joined the negotiations, it significantly strengthened Ukraine’s position.”
Notably, the day after Putin’s meeting with Schröder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with the leaders of Europe’s “Big Three”—the UK Prime Minister, German Chancellor, and French President. This summit aims to coordinate next steps in engaging with Russia and bolstering support for Ukraine amid rising tensions.
The discussion around Schröder as a potential negotiator underscores the complexity of international relations and the strain between Europe and Russia. Europe’s rejection of Schröder signals unity among European countries on matters related to supporting Ukraine. The upcoming meeting with the Big Three leaders could prove pivotal in forging a joint strategy for future engagement with Russia and ensuring regional stability.
