Sikorski Warns Zelenskyy Could Be Stripped of the Order of the White Eagle Over Schröder Controversy.
Concerns Over the Order of the White Eagle
According to Espreso.tv: Radosław Sikorski has raised alarms about the possibility of Volodymyr Zelenskyy being stripped of the Order of the White Eagle amid his dispute with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Sikorski pointed out the irony that Schröder, who led Germany from 1998 to 2005 and continues to receive financial backing from Russia, might retain the honor, while the Ukrainian president—actively resisting Kremlin aggression—could lose it. This tension highlights broader geopolitical strains involving European allies.
“I hope that after the decisions of the chancellor and President Karol Nawrocki, we won’t see a situation where former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who takes money from Putin, remains a Knight of the Order of the White Eagle, while someone fighting against Putin is stripped of it,” Sikorski stated.
Ukraine-Poland Conflict Intensifies
Relations between Ukraine and Poland have soured following a decree signed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy on May 26, 2023, which granted the honorary title ‘named after the Heroes of the UPA’ to the Separate Special Operations Center ‘North.’ This move drew sharp criticism from Polish authorities. On May 29, 2023, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced plans to revoke Zelenskyy’s highest Polish decoration. Subsequently, on June 2, 2023, Krzysztof Bosak called for blocking Ukraine’s EU accession, and on June 5, 2023, Donald Tusk stated that resolving the situation rests with the Ukrainian side.
Tusk addressed both Zelenskyy and Nawrocki, urging dialogue and warning:
“If we quarrel over the past, someone else will win the future. The Ukrainian president must finally understand this. So must Poles. Before it’s too late.”
He also emphasized that it is in Poland’s interest to maintain good relations with Ukraine rather than escalate disputes over historical policies. “I call for direct and honest dialogue regarding the Ukrainian unit named after the Heroes of the UPA,” Tusk added.
The conflict between Ukraine and Poland, rooted in historical disagreements, could have serious consequences for bilateral ties, especially given Ukraine’s need for support amid Russian aggression. The concerns over potentially stripping Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle underscore the critical importance of strategic partnership between the two nations, particularly during times of crisis. Finding compromises and sustaining dialogue remain essential to preventing further deterioration that could harm shared regional interests.
