This horrific accident occurred less than a minute into the race at the first turn, resulting in the race being stopped.
Several Toyota 86 cars collided with each other, and Richards found himself trapped between two cars. Another driver, Harrison Blanchard, hit him from behind, causing significant damage to his car.
Commentator Chad Neylon noted: “He absolutely crashed into the side of the car, and we’re going to switch immediately to the safety car.”
“Look at the damage to that car, it’s been shattered to pieces.”
An ambulance quickly arrived and took Richards to the hospital in Orange.
Later, he posted an update on his social media page, stating that he lost consciousness as a result of the collision.
Sharing a photo from his hospital bed, he noted: “I had an unfortunate accident today that led to me being taken to the hospital. For those who don’t know, I was involved in a multi-car crash that hit me in the head.”
“But I’m feeling much better, I have a slight headache, but I’ve already been discharged from the hospital.”
“A big thank you to the medical staff who looked after me at the scene and at the medical center, as well as to the personnel and paramedics at Orange Hospital.”
GR driver Elys Buckley added: “This is not something you usually see in this category; incidents often happen on the straights after the first turn.”
“But I’ve never seen anything like this in the 86.”
“It happened very quickly. We were lucky that we didn’t end up with the car on its roof.”
