Tax on milkshakes in Britain: what will change with the new budget.
Sugar tax on dairy drinks
According to The Sun: The Health Secretary has confirmed that milkshakes and lattes will be subject to the sugar tax starting from tomorrow's budget. Currently, milk-based drinks are exempt from this tax, which was introduced by the Conservatives in 2018. To date, the tax applies only to non-dairy drinks containing 5g of sugar per 100ml. However, this threshold will be lowered to 4.5g.
“Last year, we stated that we would combat excessive sugar consumption, and this step is another move in that direction.”
Changes in tax policy regarding dairy drinks are part of the government's overall strategy to reduce sugar consumption among the population. The measures introduced may encourage manufacturers to adjust the recipes of their products to meet the new requirements, while consumers may be prompted to consider healthier alternatives. This step also indicates an increase in government control over food products and their impact on public health.
