Council of Europe plays a key role in holding Russia accountable for the crime of aggression - Secretary-General.

The statement by Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Alain Berce points out the Council's key role in holding Russia accountable for the crime of aggression. He stated this at the Summit of the Future, held within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly.

Berce emphasized that the Council of Europe supports the UN's goals for ensuring peace and contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. However, it has its own goals, and currently its priority is supporting Ukraine, which is a member state of the Council.

The Secretary-General of the Council of Europe noted that this year the Register of Damages started operating, in which contributions for compensation for the damages caused by Russia due to the aggressive war are gathered. He also emphasized the role of the Council of Europe in addressing the crime of aggression and the action plan to increase resilience and recovery in Ukraine.

Berce particularly noted that the European Court of Human Rights is the only international jurisdiction addressing human rights violations in the context of this war.

Let us remind you, the Council of Europe has 46 members, and Russia was excluded from the organization due to its aggression against Ukraine.
