Why Ukraine’s Air Defense Is Struggling Against Russia’s New Jet-Powered Drones.
How Russian Drones Are Reshaping Ukraine’s Defense Challenge
According to Espreso.tv: Russia has been pushing the boundaries of drone technology by equipping attack UAVs with jet engines, a shift that is straining Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. These experiments began in late 2024, became more systematic by 2025, and by 2026, the share of jet-powered drones in Russian strikes has grown significantly. This evolution directly threatens the effectiveness of Ukrainian defensive forces.
Speed and Lethality of the New Drones
Conventional Shahed drones with piston engines typically fly at speeds between 160 and 240 km/h, but their jet-powered counterparts can exceed 300 km/h. This increased speed makes attacks far more lethal, especially as Russian forces have adopted new tactics. On July 6, 2026, Russian troops were recorded shifting to novel strike strategies involving jet-propelled Shaheds.
Currently, Ukraine operates over 600 mobile fire teams to counter these threats. However, according to expert Vadym Kushnikov, the situation is worrying.
“Unfortunately, this trend has become more evident since the beginning of this year.” – Vadym Kushnikov
Kushnikov also noted that “these developments make such weapons even more lethal and deadly.” He emphasized that 2026 could very well be “the year jet technology flourishes in unmanned aviation.”
In short, Russia’s increasing use of jet-powered drones poses a serious challenge to Ukraine’s air defense, demanding urgent measures to safeguard the country’s airspace. The intensity of attacks, combined with Moscow’s evolving tactics, highlights the need for Ukraine to adapt its defense strategy and upgrade its air defense technology to effectively counter these new threats.
