Stadler Nears Completion of FLIRT Intercity Production: Testing Set to Begin in 2026.
Final Assembly Underway for New FLIRT Intercity Trains
According to Novyny.live: Swiss manufacturer Stadler is putting the finishing touches on a fleet of electric multiple units (EMUs) ordered by the Austro-Hungarian railway operator GYSEV. Currently, the first four trains are in their final assembly stage at Stadler’s facility in Poland. Testing of these new trains is scheduled for August 2026, with trials planned across Romania, Czechia, and Hungary.
GYSEV placed an order for a total of 11 FLIRT Intercity EMUs. The first fully assembled train is expected to arrive in Hungary by the end of 2023, with the complete fleet of 11 trains slated to be ready by the summer of 2028. These new electric trains, capable of reaching speeds up to 160 km/h, will operate on the Budapest–Győr–Sopron and Budapest–Győr–Szombathely routes.
Technical Specifications and Passenger Amenities
Dávid Vitézi, a representative of GYSEV, stated:
“The first four trains are already in the assembly phase.”Each Intercity unit will consist of five cars, featuring a low-floor design, air conditioning, a modern passenger information system, Wi-Fi, and USB-C charging ports. Additionally, long-distance trains will include a dedicated catering area.
By integrating cutting-edge technology into these new EMUs, GYSEV continues to upgrade its services, aiming to boost both comfort and travel speed for passengers.
The modernization of rail transport in Hungary represents a significant step toward improving transit efficiency and infrastructure. The planned multinational testing—spanning several countries—highlights international cooperation in the transport sector, potentially setting new quality benchmarks for regional rail connections. With the introduction of these new electric trains, GYSEV hopes not only to enhance passenger comfort but also to reduce carbon emissions, advancing environmental initiatives in transportation.
