Reuters learned where the historic meeting between Trump and Putin may take place.
Russia considers Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as possible venues for the Trump-Putin meeting
According to Reuters, Russia is considering Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as potential locations for a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump expressed his intention to quickly end the war in Ukraine and stated his willingness to meet with Putin. Putin also congratulated Trump on his election victory and confirmed his readiness to discuss issues related to Ukraine and energy.
Russian officials have visited both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates but did not provide a direct response regarding contacts with the U.S. about the meeting.
'Almost the entire West is involved on the side of Ukraine. Therefore, all the traditional venues where such events used to be held - Helsinki, Geneva, Vienna - are unsuitable,' said Fyodor Lukyanov, scientific director of the Valdai Discussion Club, whose members regularly meet with Putin.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates remain neutral regarding the war in Ukraine and maintain contacts with the President of Ukraine. Moreover, they are not members of the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for Putin.
The President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, stated his readiness to support efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine and successfully act as a mediator in prisoner exchanges. Trump also mentioned planned meetings and negotiations with various parties, including Ukraine and Russia, to which the Kremlin confirmed that contacts 'are obviously being planned.'
There is some opposition to holding the meeting in Russia due to the close military and security ties of both monarchies with the U.S. Turkey, a NATO member, is also not considered as a possible venue for the meeting, despite having hosted peace talks between Russia and Ukraine before.
Earlier, ISW assessed the prospects of peace under Putin.
