He joined Burnley last summer after moving from Barcelona, where his father received the Ballon d'Or.

Now Mendes is likely to leave Lancashire and move to Yorkshire, as his transfer to Hull City is nearing completion.

According to Hull Live, Mendes will join the U21 team at Bishop Burton College in the coming days.

The attacking midfielder played in five Premier League Cup matches last season, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

However, this summer he became one of 13 players released by Burnley, paving the way for a new transfer in England.

In February this year, Mendes admitted in an interview with ESPN that he initially found it challenging to adjust to the cold climate in the UK, but he appreciated the passion of the fans.

“It’s difficult at first, there’s no doubt about that. Even more so now in winter, because it’s a bit worse here in the north. When we put on gloves and wear two pairs of socks, we can cope.”

“Although it’s a small town, the people are very passionate and connected to football. You can see that in the games, as the [fans] always fill the stadium.”

“I think that’s very good, their connection to the club is very strong.”

Mendes also speaks about his father's legacy, emphasizing that he wants to be an independent footballer and step out of the shadow of the 45-year-old Ronaldinho.

“I want to be João, no matter what. I have never tried to be my father, I never wanted to be my father. So I see this as a good start and a good step for me to get a little away from where he played and what is close to him.”

In Hull, Mendes will not be the only player with a famous father. He will be joined by Zak Yagielka, the son of former Everton and England national team player Phil Jagielka.

Despite the fact that his father played for England no less than 40 times, Zak has been playing for the Wales U19 national team since 2023.

The challenges he faced in adapting to the new environment could also drive his professional growth. At the same time, Zak Yagielka continues to develop in the Wales U19 national team, trying to be a worthy heir to the family football tradition.
