Joao was released from Burnley earlier this summer.
Official Signing
Earlier this week, media reported that the left-footed winger was preparing to move to a new club after being released from Burnley. Now it’s official – Mendes has signed a one-year contract with the option to extend for another year.
In a statement, Hull noted: '
Hull City is pleased to announce the signing of energetic winger Joao Mendes.
The 20-year-old joins as a free agent and will play under the guidance of Connor Sellars in the youth league.'
In Mendes's Words
Excited about his new beginning, Mendes shared: '
I am really happy and excited. I think it will be a good season.
I watched the game against Birmingham Under-21s, and the team looks very strong. I'm excited for the future.
I play as a right winger or attacking midfielder. I am a fast, explosive, and creative player. I can play in different football styles.'
He also expressed his admiration for the stadium, saying: '
This is a great, beautiful stadium (MKM Stadium). Everything looks good, the pitch is in perfect condition, and I am just happy to be here and play.'
Challenges and New Opportunities
Mendes previously spoke about the difficulty of stepping out of his father's shadow, noting that the climate change from Brazil to England was 'challenging'. In a conversation with ESPN in February, he remarked: '
It's really hard at the beginning, not going to lie. Especially now, with winter, here in the north it's a bit worse.'
In Hull, he won't be the only one with a famous father. He will be joined by Zac Jagielka, son of former Everton and England player Phil Jagielka.
This transfer has become a notable event in English football, as Joao Mendes will be one of those to continue the traditions of a football dynasty, and his new path at Hull City marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career. Soon we will be able to watch his performances in the youth league, which will undoubtedly attract the attention of football fans worldwide.
