According to The Sun: Stars of Europe at the Ryder Cup received VR goggles to prepare for upcoming challenges. Next week they will be competing in New York.

Rory McIlroy recalls how he requested to max out his setup, realizing he would be the main target for fans at Bethpage Black.

Sunday Times

McIlroy shared that European captain Luke Donald distributed VR goggles to his players, caddies, and families after dinner before the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Preparing for the Atmosphere

The experienced player explained: “We used them to recreate the sights, sounds, and noise of the crowd.”

“This is what we will have to deal with. So it’s better to try to lessen our vulnerability to it before we get there.”
“The sound can be adjusted individually. You can make them say anything you want. You can get as close to reality as you want.”

Past Incidents

McIlroy has already found himself in a few uncomfortable situations with American fans. For instance, he had a conflict with a fan during the 2016 Ryder Cup over offensive comments about his then-girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, resulting in the offender being removed from the stands. He also confiscated a phone from one of the fans who was bothering him during the Players Championship and handed it over to a security staff member.

The player stated: “I think it was on me, I shouldn’t have reacted that way. I understand that I need to work on not noticing everything happening around me.”

“The comments weren't pleasant, but I shouldn't have reacted. I'm trying to become more resilient. I hope VR will help.”

At the very least, Americans won't be able to criticize McIlroy for his game. After three tough days at Wentworth, he finished the event 7 under par, including five birdies and two eagles.
