Railway Under Fire: Ukraine’s State Rail Operator Tightens Security Amid Intensified Russian Strikes.
Escalating Russian Attacks on Rail Infrastructure
According to Novyny.live: Since March 2023, Russian forces have sharply increased their assaults on Ukraine’s railway network, prompting Ukrzaliznytsia to reinforce safety protocols and maintain service even in frontline communities. Dozens of locomotives have been hit since the start of that month alone, and since the full-scale invasion began, the state rail operator’s facilities have come under attack nearly 5,000 times.
In just the early months of 2026, roughly 500 strikes on the railway system have been recorded, underscoring the persistent threat to rail transport in Ukraine. In response, Ukrzaliznytsia has prioritized passenger safety. Oleksandr Pertsovskyi stated:
'Our principle is to preserve connectivity—even restoring service in some frontline communities that temporarily lost rail access—while doing everything possible to protect the lives and health of our passengers.' Oleksandr Pertsovskyi
These steps highlight the efforts of Ukrainian railway workers to sustain the transport network despite the challenges posed by Russian aggression. Ukrzaliznytsia continues to focus on ensuring safety and stability amid ongoing hostilities.
The Critical Role of Ukraine’s Railways
Ukraine’s rail infrastructure is now vital for moving both passengers and cargo, including humanitarian aid and military equipment. The relentless attacks not only endanger travelers but also threaten the country’s economy, as railways serve as the primary mode of transport in Ukraine.
Ukrzaliznytsia’s response to these challenges demonstrates its ability to adapt and keep operating under extremely difficult circumstances. This context is essential for understanding why the railway remains a key target and a lifeline during the war.
