The assault occurred after 12:00 PM, when two attack drones hit the grounds of the medical facility, which treats children. Preliminary reports indicate there were no casualties. At the time of the attack, children and medical staff were sheltering in a safe location, and no one required medical attention.
The strike caused significant damage, shattering dozens of windows in the hospital building. Oleg Hryhorov, a representative of the medical institution, commented on the event, stating:
“After 12:00, the enemy struck the hospital territory with two attack drones, about half an hour apart. The children and medical personnel were in the shelter. Preliminary information is that there are no victims.” - Oleg Hryhorov
Military Activity and the Safety of Medical Facilities
This incident was part of a broader wave of military activity, as Ukraine reported 154 attack drones and one 'Iskander-M' ballistic missile were launched that day. The hospital attack has heightened alarm among local residents and healthcare workers, underscoring the grave risks faced by medical institutions during the conflict. Such strikes on civilian infrastructure are a recurring feature of the war, raising serious legal and humanitarian concerns.
The attack on the Sumy hospital and similar incidents demonstrate an escalating threat to civilian objects in combat zones, fueling public anxiety over safety. This violation of international humanitarian law, which mandates the protection of medical facilities, highlights the severity of the situation in Ukraine. Amid active hostilities, medical establishments remain vulnerable, endangering the lives of patients and medical personnel.
