Ukraine Endures Major Assault

According to UATV: Beginning on the evening of February 16, 2023, and continuing into February 17, Russian forces launched a massive, coordinated attack against Ukraine. The assault involved a complex arsenal including 4 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles, over 390 attack drones, and 24 cruise missiles. Specifically, the cruise missile component consisted of 20 Kh-101 missiles and 4 'Iskander-K' missiles. This attack represents one of the largest drone assaults of the conflict to date.

In total, Russian troops fired 396 attack drones of various types during this operation. Ukrainian air defenses reported successfully destroying 392 of these aerial targets. However, four ballistic missiles and 18 attack drones managed to strike their targets across 13 different locations, indicating the challenge of defending against such a large-scale, multi-vector attack.

Comparing the Scale of Attacks

This recent barrage marks a significant escalation in the use of drones compared to earlier phases of the war. For context, in January 2023, Russian forces fired 91 ballistic missiles at Ukraine. The ongoing conflict continues to evolve, with Russia increasingly employing swarms of cheaper drones alongside its precision missiles to overwhelm air defenses.

The scale and composition of this attack underscore a dangerous intensification of hostilities and a shift in Russian military tactics. The heavy reliance on drones suggests a strategic adaptation aimed at saturating Ukrainian air defenses and inflicting widespread damage, posing a severe and persistent threat to the country's security and critical infrastructure.

In response to these developments, the international community remains focused on monitoring the situation and supporting efforts to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities against such complex aerial threats.
