Ukraine Endures Major Russian Assault on March 8th Involving Ballistic Missiles and Drones.
Russia Launches Coordinated Strike on Ukraine
According to UATV: On March 8th, Russian forces executed a large-scale attack against Ukraine, employing a significant arsenal of aerial weapons. The assault involved the launch of two 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles from Russia's Rostov and Voronezh regions, alongside 117 attack drones of various models. This attack is part of a sustained pattern of Russian aggression that has targeted Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and energy grids.
A substantial portion of the drone attack, approximately 70 units, consisted of 'Shahed' type loitering munitions. The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were launched from multiple Russian locations, including Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Millerovo, and from Gvardeyskoye in occupied Crimea. Preliminary reports indicate that Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted or neutralized 98 hostile UAVs, including 'Shahed' and 'Gerbera' models, across the country's northern, southern, and eastern regions.
Impact and Ukrainian Defense Response
Ukrainian military officials confirmed that the attack resulted in impacts from two ballistic missiles and 19 attack drones across 11 different locations. The defensive effort was a combined operation involving Ukrainian Air Force units, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare (EW) units, and mobile fire groups from the Defense Forces.
'Preliminary data as of 09:00 indicates that air defense has shot down/suppressed 98 enemy UAVs of the Shahed, 'Gerbera' and other types in the north, south, and east of the country. Impacts from two ballistic missiles and 19 attack UAVs have been recorded at 11 locations,' stated the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
This assault represents another episode in the protracted armed conflict in Ukraine. The extensive use of drones, alongside ballistic missiles, highlights the evolving nature of modern warfare in the region. Ukraine's ability to destroy a high percentage of the incoming drones demonstrates significant improvements in its layered air defense capabilities since the full-scale invasion began.
