Ukraine Intercepts 77 of 94 Drones in Major Russian Assault.
March 12, 2023 Attack
According to UATV: On March 12, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale assault on Ukraine, firing 94 combat drones from multiple directions. According to the Ukrainian Air Force Command, the nation's air defense systems successfully intercepted or neutralized 77 of these hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Over 60 of the drones launched were identified as Iranian-made 'Shahed' models.
Despite the defensive efforts, 16 strike drones hit their targets across 11 different locations. This attack followed a series of strikes on the city of Zaporizhzhia the previous day, March 11, 2023. Those earlier attacks resulted in 11 civilian casualties, including two children, and damaged 33 residential buildings—nine apartment blocks and 24 private homes.
Ongoing Situation
The incident underscores the persistent threat from Russian forces and highlights the effectiveness of Ukraine's air defenses, as confirmed by the Air Force Command's statement:
"According to preliminary data, as of 09:00, air defense forces have shot down/suppressed 77 enemy UAVs." - Ukrainian Air Force Command
This information reflects the severity of the conflict and its direct impact on Ukraine's civilian population. The ongoing war, now in its second year, has increasingly seen the use of drone swarms as a key tactic. The events of recent days demonstrate the critical need for continued support and modernization of air defense systems to protect civilians from these evolving threats.
