February 21, 2023 Attack on Ukraine
According to UATV: On February 21, 2023, Russian forces launched a large-scale assault against Ukraine, firing an 'Iskander-M' ballistic missile and 120 attack drones from Russia's Voronezh region. The drone models used in the attack included 'Shahed', 'Italmas', 'Gerbera', and other types, with approximately 80 of the units being 'Shahed' drones. This attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and military sites.
By 08:30, Ukraine's active air defenses had successfully intercepted or neutralized 106 of the hostile drones. Despite this, the ballistic missile and 13 attack drones struck 11 different locations. Debris from downed drones was recorded at eight additional sites, highlighting both the scale of the attack and the effectiveness of Ukraine's defensive response.
Regional Tensions
This incident underscores the ongoing volatility in the region and the continuation of Russian military aggression. Ukrainian authorities are actively working to bolster their defensive capabilities, particularly against aerial threats. The reliance on drone swarms and ballistic missiles points to an escalation in tactics and Russia's increasing use of newer technologies in this conflict. Ukraine's efforts to strengthen its air defense systems remain critically important in the face of persistent threats from the aggressor state.
