Russia Launches Major Missile and Drone Assault on Ukraine, Featuring 'Zircon' Hypersonic Weapons.
Russia's Large-Scale Assault on Ukraine
According to UATV: On February 16, Russian military forces executed a major attack against Ukraine, employing a diverse arsenal of missiles and drones. This assault is part of a continued pattern of escalation in the ongoing war. According to reports, the attacking forces launched:
- four 'Zircon' anti-ship missiles,
- one 'Iskander-M' ballistic missile,
- one Kh-31P guided air-to-surface missile,
- 62 attack unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The missiles were fired from the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea, as well as from Russia's Bryansk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. The drones were launched from several directions, including Millerovo, Kursk, Bryansk, Shatalovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Russian Federation), and Hvardiiske (occupied Crimea).
Preliminary data indicates that, as of 09:00, Ukrainian air defense forces managed to shoot down or jam two 'Zircon' missiles and 52 enemy UAVs. However, impacts from one missile and nine attack drones were recorded at eight different locations.
The attack resulted in three people being wounded in the Sumy region, and medical facilities sustained damage. As stated by representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:
“According to preliminary data, as of 09:00, air defense has shot down/jammed two 'Zircon' anti-ship missiles and 52 enemy UAVs.”
It was also confirmed that “impacts from one missile and 9 attack UAVs at 8 locations have been recorded.”
Consequences of the Attack
This represents one of the largest recent attacks and underscores the persistent escalation of the conflict. The use of advanced weaponry like the 'Zircon' and 'Iskander' highlights the significant military capabilities at Russia's disposal. Despite the successful actions of Ukrainian air defense, the consequences for civilians remain severe, with injuries and damage to critical infrastructure emphasizing the ongoing threat to the safety of Ukraine's civilian population.
