Russia's Upgraded 'Shahed' Drones Gain Visual Targeting, Posing Heightened Danger.
The Threat from FPV Drones
According to Novyny.live: During the YES Meeting organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, Deputy Commander of the 21st Separate Rifle Battalion, Ihor Firsov, warned that the threat of FPV drone attacks on Kyiv and its suburbs remains. He also detailed ongoing upgrades to Russian 'Shahed' drones. These Iranian-designed loitering munitions have been a persistent threat to Ukrainian infrastructure since the full-scale invasion began.
Firsov stated that Russian 'Shahed' drones are being constantly modified and improved.
“As far as we know, some 'Shaheds' can now see where they are flying,”he noted, indicating the drones are becoming more technologically advanced, which could increase risks for civilians.
“Perhaps for the civilian population, 'Shaheds' will become much more dangerous,”Firsov added.
Security Measures in Response
In response to the FPV drone threat, authorities in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast have begun installing anti-drone nets. This demonstrates that local governments are taking active steps to enhance security. Meanwhile, in occupied Crimea, Russian forces are conducting training and testing new drone control tactics. Ihor Firsov emphasized that
“FPV drones continue to be very dangerous right now, including in Kyiv,”highlighting the ongoing threat to Ukrainian cities.
The statements from Ihor Firsov underscore the increasing technological sophistication of Russian drones and their growing threat to civilians in Ukraine. The deployment of anti-drone nets in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast points to the necessity of proactive security measures to mitigate risks to the population. This evolving situation raises significant concerns for the safety of cities like Kyiv, particularly amid the constant military threats.
