NATO Warned of Potential Russian Attack Within Two to Three Years.
Russia's Threat and Europe's Defense Posture
According to UATV: General Gerald Funke has warned that Russia could launch an attack against NATO member states within the next two to three years. He stressed the critical need to maintain Germany as the Alliance's logistical hub, ensuring uninterrupted management of supply lines. This statement reflects deep concern over escalating military threats from Russia, which, according to Bloomberg, is actively developing capabilities and strategic options for waging and surviving a large-scale war against NATO. These warnings come as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally altered Europe's security landscape.
The defense situation across Europe is alarming, with many EU nations facing serious shortfalls in weapons production. Addressing these deficiencies is estimated to require approximately $1 trillion and at least a decade. In the context of NATO's heightened readiness in the Baltic region, the Alliance plans to conduct the Steadfast Dart military exercises in 2026, involving over 10,000 troops from 11 member countries.
Shifting Perceptions and the Call for Coordination
A significant shift in Moscow's perception of the West has also been noted. Data from Latvia's Constitution Protection Bureau indicates that in recent years, Russian leadership has come to view the West as an existential threat to its regime. In response, European politicians like Andrius Kubilius are advocating for the creation of a European Security Council to coordinate actions in the continent's major defense transformation.
This evolving situation underscores the vital importance of NATO cooperation in strengthening defensive capabilities and readiness against potential Russian aggression. Plans for large-scale military exercises and initiatives to improve arms manufacturing demonstrate the Alliance's serious intent to deter potential aggressors. The establishment of new structures, such as a proposed European Security Council, could be a crucial step in ensuring coordinated security actions among EU nations.
