Russian Deputy Suggests Joint Olympic Hosting with Another Nation.
Olympic Champion Zhurova on Russia's Potential to Host the Games
According to Novyny.live: Russian State Duma deputy and Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Zhurova has proposed that Russia could co-host a future Olympic Games with another country. She asserted that Russia's existing infrastructure would allow it to stage the Olympics 'as soon as tomorrow.' Zhurova specifically listed several cities she considers ready to host events:
- Moscow
- Kazan
- Sochi
- Saint Petersburg
The deputy also outlined a hypothetical scenario for a joint Games with Finland, where venues could be split between Saint Petersburg and Helsinki. However, she noted that realizing any such plans would not be feasible before 2038.
'Today, it is genuinely difficult for a single country to bear the burden of hosting the Olympic Games alone, which makes the idea of a joint bid logical and interesting.' - Svetlana Zhurova
Joint Olympic Hosting and Russia's International Standing
The next Winter Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Italy from February 6 to 22, 2026.
Zhurova's comments reflect Russia's ongoing efforts to re-enter the global sporting community amid its current political isolation. A co-hosting arrangement could serve as a potential compromise, attracting foreign investment and improving Russia's international image. This proposal comes as major sporting federations continue to navigate the complex relationship between global sports and geopolitics. Nevertheless, executing such a project would require substantial effort and high-level agreements between governments and international sports bodies.
