Russian Industry Fails to Replace Foreign Equipment by 2026, Quality Issues Persist.
The State of Russian Industry
According to UATV: According to a statement from Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service on March 12, 2026, the majority of Russia's manufacturing enterprises have failed to fully replace foreign-made parts and equipment. This ongoing challenge highlights the long-term impact of sanctions imposed following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Despite some partial adaptation to sanctions, the persistent problem of declining product quality remains unresolved.
Data indicates that by the end of 2025, sanctions had been imposed on 24,000 Russian legal entities and individuals. This has severely complicated the market situation, particularly in machine tool building, where the share of domestic production in the final product reached 70%. However, dependence on imported computerized numerical control (CNC) systems and sensors remains critically high, at 80-95%.
The Foreign Intelligence Service noted: 'In machine tool building, the share of domestic production in the final product has reached 70%, yet dependence on imported computerized numerical control systems and sensors remains at 80-95%.'
These figures point to the serious challenges facing Russian industry under sanctions. Despite efforts to develop domestic production, achieving high product quality consistently remains difficult without access to imported components.
Challenges for the Russian Economy
This situation underscores the difficulty of adapting Russian industry to the new conditions created by international sanctions. Dependence on imported technologies, especially in critical sectors like machine tool building, could significantly limit opportunities for development and production modernization.
The potential for further sanctions or their prolonged duration may lead to even more severe consequences for the Russian economy.
