Ukrainian Veteran Accuses Russia of Systematic War Crimes and Chemical Threat
According to Novyny.live: Mykola Melnyk, a veteran of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and former commander of a mechanized company equipped with M2 Bradley fighting vehicles, issued a stark warning on January 26. He stated that Russian forces are systematically violating the laws of war, expressing particular concern over the threat of chemical weapon attacks, including against civilians. Melnyk emphasized that this escalating situation demands a decisive response from Ukraine's military and political leadership.
He highlighted that the Security Service of Ukraine has already documented over 10,000 instances of Russian chemical attacks targeting Ukrainian military positions.
"We know, we have noted ourselves, that approximately 9,000 cases have been recorded,"Melnyk said. He stressed that this data is crucial for understanding the severe threat Ukraine faces in the ongoing armed conflict, which has seen repeated violations of international humanitarian law.
International Support and the Danger to Civilians
In a related development, Ukraine has secured a seat on the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the 2026–2028 term. This position could help increase international scrutiny of Russia's alleged violations. Melnyk also pointed to the broader dangers for non-combatants, noting that
"our civilian population constantly suffers from Shahed drone strikes,"underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for comprehensive support from the state and international partners to counter these threats.
The veteran's statements underscore the extreme seriousness of the situation in Ukraine. The systematic breaches of international law and the persistent danger to civilians highlight an urgent need for intensified international efforts to ensure security. Ukraine's involvement in bodies like the OPCW represents a potential step forward in combating such violations and mobilizing greater global resources and support against these acts of aggression.
