Russian Naval Presence in the Black Sea

According to Novyny.live: Despite suffering losses, Russia continues to maintain a combat-ready naval force in the Black Sea. According to Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk, the fleet currently consists of up to seven vessels, including five surface ships and two submarines. While a portion of Russia's Black Sea Fleet has been relocated to Novorossiysk, its overall operational capability remains intact despite previous damage. The Black Sea remains a critical theater of operations, where naval power directly influences the security of coastal regions.

'In reality, at a minimum, five surface ships and two submarines remain operational. Even accounting for damage, five launch platforms are still in service.' - Dmytro Pletenchuk

A significant part of the Black Sea Fleet, including missile carriers, is now based in Novorossiysk. 'Secondly, the main contingent of the Black Sea Fleet is stationed there. That's dozens of ships, among them patrol boats and missile corvettes,' Pletenchuk added. This data indicates that Russia has preserved its military potential in the region in spite of numerous setbacks.

Potential Offensive Against Odesa

U.S. analysts assess that Russia may be planning a potential offensive against the Odesa region between 2025 and 2027. This has raised concerns in Ukraine, where defense forces are preparing the city for all-around defense. In response to these threats, on March 7 and 8, Ukrainian Defense Forces struck Russian targets in Crimea, demonstrating Kyiv's active measures to defend its territory and counter Russian military pressure.

Broader Black Sea Situation

The situation in the Black Sea remains tense, with Russia's active maintenance of warships confirming its readiness to continue military operations. Although part of the fleet has been moved to Novorossiysk, the Black Sea Fleet retains significant potential, requiring Ukraine to maintain constant readiness for possible threats.

The persistence of Russian naval capabilities and plans for a potential Odesa offensive underscore the region's strategic importance to both nations. Given Odesa's vital role as a port and logistical hub, Ukrainian forces continue to bolster defensive capabilities in anticipation of future threats. This points to the protracted nature of the conflict and the necessity for ongoing monitoring of both maritime and land-based developments.
