Russia has deployed new guided bombs: what are the threats of bombs with a range of 200 km
Ukrainians were told what guided bombs are, which Russia began using to strike cities in the rear.

Expansion of the application geography

On October 24, the use of a modernized guided bomb was detected for the first time in the Odesa region. The Air Force Command warned about a bomb moving over the Black Sea towards the port city of Yuzhne.

The head of the Odesa Regional Administration, Oleg Kiper, characterized this situation as a serious threat to the region, noting that such attacks pose a tremendous danger to civilians and can lead to significant destruction.

Evolution of aviation bombs

  • First generation: guided bombs with a guidance module

Since the end of 2023, the Russian army has been actively using guided bombs based on Soviet FAB-250 and FAB-500. The main novelty is the universal planning and correction module (UPK) — an aluminum device with folding wings that has satellite and inertial navigation, as well as elements for countering electronic jamming.

  • New generation: guided bombs

The latest modification has twice the range — up to 150-200 kilometers. GUR representative Vadym Skibitsky reported that during tests in September-October, a range of 193 kilometers was achieved. The general warned of the commencement of serial production of such munitions.

Technical characteristics of the new weapon

Modernized bombs are known by the names 'Hrim-1' (Hrim-E1, 'Hrim-2') or UMPB-5R. Specialist in electronic warfare systems, Serhiy Bezkrisny describes their characteristics:

  • Warhead: 100 kilograms
  • Diameter: 30 centimeters
  • Construction: solid body, similar to a cruise missile

Chinese component

Analysis of the downed bomb on October 20, which flew over 120 kilometers to Poltava, showed that it uses the SW800 engine from the Chinese company Swiwin. This is a civilian model priced at 15-17 thousand dollars, available on marketplaces. Russia has also used similar engines in the cruise missiles S-8000 'Banderolet'.

Threat to rear cities

Considering the established production and Soviet stocks of FABs, new munitions pose a serious threat to cities located 100-200 kilometers from the front line: Dnipro, Chernihiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv.

Unlike ordinary guided bombs, which are used by the thousands daily, guided missiles are still used sporadically.

The problem of electronic warfare

In nearly four years of full-scale war, no fully effective solution against guided bombs has been found. Although Ukrainian electronic warfare improves targeting accuracy, even a missed bomb has hundreds of kilograms of explosives, causing enormous damage to civilian objects.

Head of the electronic warfare and cyber warfare department Ivan Pavlenko explains that the enemy continually strikes populated areas to intimidate and displace residents. Despite the high effectiveness of Ukrainian EW against navigation systems, this forces the opponent to constantly improve their equipment.

Destruction of carriers

The most effective method is to shoot down carrier aircraft, primarily Su-34 and Su-35. However, this is complicated due to the lack of long-range air defense systems.

Patriot systems can hit such aircraft from a distance of up to 160 kilometers, but their quantity in Ukraine is limited. Additionally, moving to the front line creates additional risks, and the new guided bombs with a range of 200 kilometers can be launched from beyond the reach of even these systems.

Available options

Ukraine has several strategies:

  • Improving EW to deflect bombs from targets
  • Intercepting in flight with fighter jets
  • Using surface-to-air missiles (expensive option)

Earlier, Putin suddenly announced the 'near completion of the war'.

The introduction of new guided bombs increases the threat to cities located up to 200 kilometers from the front line. This weapon poses a serious danger to the civilian population and infrastructure, so it is critically important for Ukraine to seek new ways to counter such attacks.
