Ukraine's Air Defense Intercepts Half of Over 230 Russian Kh-47M2 Kinzhal Missiles.
Russia's Deployment of Kinzhal Missiles Against Ukraine
According to Слово і Діло — Інфографіка: Since the war began, Russia has launched more than 230 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at Ukraine, with approximately half of them shot down by Ukrainian air defense systems. In 2025 alone, around 100 such missiles were fired.
The Russian military has employed at least 230 of these advanced weapons since the conflict started. Over 10 launches were recorded in 2022, more than 40 in 2023, and over 70 in 2024. The number surged to roughly 100 in 2025. Since the start of 2026, Russia has fired the Kinzhal more than ten times, with the most recent launch occurring on June 21, 2026.
Missile Specifications and Ukraine's Defense Capabilities
The Kinzhal is a hypersonic aeroballistic missile capable of reaching speeds up to 12,000 km/h and carrying a warhead weighing approximately 500 kg. It is typically launched from MiG-31K aircraft, enabling effective strikes against targets within Ukraine.
To counter these attacks, Ukraine relies on the only systems capable of intercepting such missiles: the American Patriot and the European SAMP/T. Despite these efforts, about half of the Kinzhal missiles have still managed to hit their targets. This ongoing challenge underscores the need for continued vigilance by Ukrainian forces and sustained support from the international community.
Russia's use of Kinzhal hypersonic missiles is a key component of its wartime strategy, as these weapons can reach targets quickly, complicating interception efforts.
These repeated strikes can affect the morale of Ukrainian troops and civilians, as well as the overall battlefield situation. Although Ukraine's air defense has proven effective, it faces significant hurdles in countering such high-speed threats, highlighting the urgent need for further modernization and enhanced assistance from global partners.
