Russia's New Energy Strikes Aim to Demoralize Ukraine.
Surge in Missile and Drone Attacks Across Ukraine
According to UATV: Russia has intensified its campaign of missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, with a renewed focus on energy infrastructure targets. The attacks, which employ newly produced missiles, are designed to inflict psychological pressure on the Ukrainian population. On January 25, 2023, General Mykola Malomuzh of the Ukrainian Army commented on Russia's strikes, emphasizing their deliberate aim to crush the spirit of the Ukrainian people. This strategy mirrors tactics used in previous winters to weaponize cold and darkness against civilians.
Advanced Weaponry and Smuggled Components
The weaponry includes Kh-22 missiles, produced in 2026, which can carry a warhead weighing up to 950 kg. The assaults also involve drones with 40 kg warheads and other missiles with 100-150 kg payloads. General Malomuzh noted that these missiles contain components supplied by countries that are both allies and geopolitical rivals of Russia. These parts are funneled through clandestine smuggling channels, highlighting the complex and severe nature of the threat.
General Malomuzh described these actions as operating in an 'openly terrorist format.' Mykola Malomuzh
He further stated that 'strict prohibition and control is one of the most effective methods' to counter such attacks. These remarks underscore the urgent need for measures to protect critical energy infrastructure and sustain public morale under these difficult conditions.
The escalation of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's energy grid points to a broader Russian military strategy aimed at destabilizing the country. The deployment of advanced missiles and drones demonstrates the technological progression of Russian armed forces and their capacity to launch assaults capable of causing severe damage. In wartime, ensuring robust protection for vital national assets is crucial, as it directly contributes to preserving civilian morale and the stability of the nation's energy system.
