49 Russian Breakthrough Attempts in a Day: Mapping the Hottest Frontline Sectors.
Frontline Update as of March 24, 2023
According to UATV: On March 24, 2023, Russian forces launched 49 attempts to breach Ukrainian defenses across seven different axes. Ukrainian defenders repelled 17 assaults on the Pokrovsk front, 13 near Hulyaipole, and nine on the Kostiantynivka axis. This surge in activity signals an escalation in combat operations, as the enemy seeks to solidify its foothold in the region.
Intense Combat Operations
On the Pokrovsk direction, the adversary is pressing hard, trying to dislodge Ukrainian troops from their positions. A Ukrainian defense spokesperson noted:
“On the Pokrovsk sector, the enemy is clinging on, fighting for Hryshyne and Rodynske. They are trying to push us out of the positions we still hold on the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad sector. Next, the enemy will attempt to advance on Dobropillia to further develop its offensive in Donetsk Oblast.” — Denys Popovych
Additionally, on the Hulyaipole bridgehead, 13 unsuccessful storming operations were recorded, while Russian troops made nine attempts to advance near Kostiantynivka. The so-called 'fortress belt' — a string of heavily fortified towns — stretches approximately 50 kilometers across the areas of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, and Kostiantynivka. This underscores the strategic importance of these territories for both sides.
As a result of the day’s fighting, Ukraine’s defense forces eliminated 890 Russian soldiers. Since the start of the full-scale war, total Russian military losses have surpassed 1,289,000 troops. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russian forces are unlikely to capture the 'fortress belt' in 2026, though they may achieve some tactical gains at the cost of heavy casualties.
The frontline situation remains tense, and how events unfold in the coming weeks could significantly reshape the strategic balance in the region.
The current uptick in combat indicates that both sides are racing to strengthen their positions in strategically vital areas. Losing or gaining control over these zones could dramatically alter the conflict’s trajectory and troop morale. Given the heavy losses Russia continues to suffer, monitoring both sides’ next moves over the coming weeks will be critical.
