Insufficient number of air defense systems in Russia

According to TSN.ua: Russia has an insufficient number of air defense systems capable of effectively countering ballistic missiles. To cover the entire territory of the country, more than 150-200 S-400 complexes are needed; however, currently, there are only a few systems in Russia that can perform this task.

Before the war, there were over 50 S-400 systems in Russia, but at least 25 of them were destroyed by the defense forces of Ukraine. This significantly reduced Russia's capabilities to protect against ballistic threats. At the same time, there are 14 air defense systems deployed in the country that provide protection for President Vladimir Putin's residence.

Problems in Russia's air defense system

Experts point to serious problems within Russia's air defense system. Pavel Narozhny, a military analyst, states:

“The Russians will have absolutely identical story. They have over 25 complexes capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, but in the best case, 150-200 units are needed to cover the entire territory.” - Pavel Narozhny

This indicates a significant imbalance between the existing capabilities and the real needs to ensure the country's security.

Konstantin Krivolap, another expert, points out that in 2022 only about two air defense systems were observed in the Valdai region. This highlights Russia's inadequate readiness to counter modern threats. Given the current situation, the country faces serious challenges in ensuring its defense capability.

The insufficient number of air defense systems in Russia may have serious consequences for national security, especially amidst growing threats from ballistic missiles. The loss of a significant portion of existing S-400 complexes indicates that the country has limited capabilities for effectively protecting its territory. Russia's further actions in this area may affect its military strategy and foreign policy within the framework of the ongoing conflict.
