Russian skater Sayetina failed her performance in the USA after participating in Putin's event.
According to inkorr.com: Russian skater Alexandra Sayetina participated in a World Cup stage held in the USA. She received the status of a neutral athlete from the International Skating Union (ISU). During her performance, Sayetina fell and could not finish the race, thus earning no points for Olympic qualification.
Discussion of participation in events
Her presence at the annual address of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Federal Assembly sparked much discussion. On February 29, 2024, Sayetina was at the event among other supporters of Putin, including Russian skier Veronika Stepanova.
It is worth noting that participation in such events contravenes the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for neutral athletes. Despite this, Sayetina managed to obtain visas for participating in two World Cup stages, where ranking points for Olympic qualification are awarded. The competitions will take place in cities such as Calgary in Canada, Heerenveen in the Netherlands, and Hamar in Norway.
Olympics 2026
The 2026 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from February 6 to 22 in Italy.
Sayetina's participation in the World Cup stages against the backdrop of her political activity raises questions about her further career on the international stage. Her chances for Olympic qualification now depend on successful performances at the competitions in Calgary, Heerenveen, and Hamar, where she will be able to compete for crucial ranking points under political pressure.
