Two Injured as Russian Drone Strikes Residential Building in Romania.
Attack in Galati
According to UATV: On May 29, 2023, a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle struck a residential building in the Romanian city of Galati. Two people were wounded, and roughly 70 residents were evacuated from nearby areas. In response, Romanian forces scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter to intercept the drone, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the military's readiness to address airspace threats. This incident is part of a broader pattern of Russian drones entering NATO airspace, raising concerns about regional security.
Psychological Pressure from Moscow
This event fits into a systematic campaign of pressure by Moscow against NATO member states. Analyst Liudmyla Pokroshchuk stated that such Kremlin actions are designed to psychologically pressure the European Union. She emphasized that
“in Russia, nothing happens by chance”, pointing out that these provocations aim to strengthen the aggressor's influence. According to her,
“this not only gives boldness, it gives confidence to the aggressor”.
Pokroshchuk further noted that
“for them, of course, this psychological pressure on civilians is very important for Russia”. She believes such actions only highlight Russia's interest in restoring ties with the European Union. Over the past year, Russia has intensified provocations in the airspace across NATO's entire eastern flank, causing concern among European nations.
Pokroshchuk remarked that
“what was shown in Romania — that is not how you respond”, underlining the need for an adequate reaction to such threats. The Galati incident serves as a stark example of how tensions between Russia and NATO countries continue to escalate, requiring close monitoring by the international community.
This event underscores the growing strain in relations between Russia and NATO, particularly regarding security in Eastern Europe. Its consequences could influence political decisions in the region and shape how NATO military forces strategize against similar threats. As a member of the Alliance, Romania is demonstrating its willingness to defend its airspace, sending a strong signal to other states facing pressure from Moscow.
