Ukrainian Drone Strikes Lukoil Refinery 1,750 km Away, Setting New Distance Record.
Attack on the Ukhta Oil Refinery
According to UATV: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has conducted a long-range drone strike on the Ukhta oil refinery, which is located 1,750 km from the Ukrainian border, setting a new distance record for Ukrainian drones. The refinery, owned by the Russian company PJSC 'Lukoil', has an annual processing capacity of approximately 4.2 million tons of oil. This operation demonstrates Ukraine's growing capability to project force deep into Russian territory, targeting critical infrastructure.
The attack caused a significant fire and heavy smoke at the facility. The strike damaged the refinery's atmospheric-vacuum pipestill unit and visbreaking unit, which are crucial for the primary processing of crude oil, its separation into fractions, and the production of commercial fuel oil, gasoline, and diesel. By targeting such refineries, Ukraine aims to degrade the enemy's ability to supply fuel for its military operations.
An informed source within the SBU stated, 'The SBU continues to carry out precision strikes on enterprises within Russia's oil refining complex, which are essential for the functioning of the aggressor country's war machine.'
Impact on Russian Military Logistics
Strikes on strategic assets like the Ukhta refinery can significantly disrupt the logistics and supply chains of Russian forces, particularly in the context of a protracted war. This also showcases Ukraine's ability to leverage advanced technology to achieve its military objectives, a factor that could alter the balance of power in the conflict. The incident underscores the critical role of energy resources in modern warfare and Ukraine's strategy of targeting them as part of its broader defensive tactics.
The situation highlights how energy infrastructure has become a key battlefield, with Ukraine seeking to undermine Russia's military-industrial capacity far from the front lines.
