Advice from the club legend

According to The Sun: Senne Lamens received advice to become the “master” in goal if he wants to shake off the curse of Manchester United's goalkeepers.

According to Alex Stepney, the first goalkeeper to win the European Cup in 1968, many modern goalkeepers are afraid to show initiative.

Debut in the derby

23-year-old Belgian Lamens signed a contract with United for 18.2 million pounds and may debut in the derby this Sunday.

“Senne, like any young goalkeeper, must show courage to be himself. Many of them do not realize that the 18-yard area is their territory and they have to control it,” Stepney noted.

Stepney believes this could be the perfect opportunity for Lamens to prove he is ready to take on serious responsibility for Manchester United's game.

The 82-year-old Stepney also recalls his debut game against Manchester City 59 years ago, emphasizing the importance of a confident start for young goalkeepers.

Challenges for Lamens

Lamens must overcome challenges related to the regular errors of Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. The departure of Peter Schmeichel was a heavy blow for the club, as the goalkeeping issues persist.

“Goalkeeper problems at United are common. After Schmeichel left in 1999, the club struggled to find a replacement, and it wasn't until six years later that Edwin van der Sar arrived,” Stepney noted.

He also emphasized that it is important for Lamens to show determination: “Playing for United is a tough challenge, and only a few can handle it. The best way to prove it is to desire to have the ball in your hands, not to be afraid of responsibility – in goal, you are the master.”

Senne Lamens stands on the brink of an important stage in his career. After successfully signing the contract, he will have to showcase his skills in high-level matches. If he can overcome the difficulties and quickly adapt to the club's demands, it could be the beginning of a new successful chapter for Manchester United in their goalkeeping line.
