Nottingham Forest has sacked Nuno Espírito Santo: Who will be the new manager?

According to The Sun: Nottingham Forest begins the search for a new manager following the surprising sacking of Nuno Espírito Santo.

The Portuguese manager, who led the team to the Europa Conference League last season, received this news late on Monday evening.

Espírito Santo was dismissed less than three weeks after his public statement regarding difficulties in the relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.

In a club statement, it says:

“Nottingham Forest Football Club confirms that Nuno Espírito Santo has today been sacked from his position as head coach due to recent events.”
“The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful time at City Ground, particularly for his role in the 2024/25 season, which will always be mentioned with gratitude in the club's history.”
“As a person who played a key role in our success last year, he will always hold a special place in our journey.”

Attention now turns to potential candidates to succeed the former Tottenham and Wolverhampton manager.

Some well-known names are among the contenders.

Ange Postecoglou

The Australian was unfairly sacked by former Tottenham chief Daniel Levy in June - just 16 days after ending the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League.

SunSport reported last month that the 60-year-old manager is a candidate for the position at Nottingham Forest.

Postecoglou is expected to seek a quick return to English football.

Jose Mourinho

The specialist has not been in the Premier League since March 2021 when he was dismissed by Tottenham.

Mourinho is currently unemployed after being sacked by Turkish club Fenerbahçe earlier this month.

However, it remains unclear whether he is ready to return to management immediately or is planning a break.

Brendan Rodgers

Unlike Postecoglou and Mourinho, Rodgers is still active - at Celtic.

A humiliating defeat in the Champions League against the Kazakh club Kairat Almaty and an unfortunate transfer window have put pressure on the Northern Irishman's future.

SunSport recently reported that Marinakis is a big admirer of Rodgers and has been trying to recruit him as Forest's manager for months.

Rodgers is in the final year of his contract at Parkhead, so an early departure is unlikely, as the club would have to pay him a severance.

However, he may decide to end the partnership, similar to when he became Leicester's manager in February 2019.

Mauricio Pochettino

The popular Argentine has not been with a club since his sacking from Tottenham in 2019. He is currently managing the USA men's national team.

He is reportedly also on the list of candidates to succeed Nuno.

Oliver Glasner

The Austrian is also on the list of candidates that interest Marinakis. According to SunSport, he wants to appoint a new manager as soon as possible after Crystal Palace won the FA Cup last year.

Glasner is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, and negotiations for a new deal with the club are on hold.

The club is concerned about the future of its manager, especially after a difficult transfer window.

Andoni Iraola

Bournemouth manager Iraola is also among the candidates to succeed Nuno after enjoying a successful time in the south.

The Spaniard led the club to the best results in its history in the 2023/24 season and currently has a win rate of 40%.

However, it may not be easy to recruit him, as Bournemouth is reportedly interested in keeping him at the club.

Marco Silva

Nuno's compatriot, Silva, has also caught Marinakis' attention.

The 48-year-old manager is reportedly 'unhappy' at Fulham and is contemplating his future at Craven Cottage.

Thus, Marinakis' contact with him, given his connections to Olympiakos, does not seem impossible.

Nottingham Forest faces the urgent need for decisions necessitated by the managerial change, and the appointment of a new manager is of great importance for the future development of the team. Against the backdrop of recent events and the competitions in the Europa Conference League, the club will try to find a professional who can utilize the players' potential as efficiently as possible and achieve positive results.
