The fourth largest city in Sicily, Alcamo, was hit by 35 mm of rain around midnight on Wednesday, leaving chaos in its wake.
Videos that surfaced on social media captured lightning strikes and torrents of water flowing through the streets of the Italian city.
Flash floods swept away parked cars and inundated garages, basements, and the ground floors of many homes, engulfing the city in just a few hours.
Emergency services received multiple requests for assistance throughout the night.
This followed similar weather conditions affecting the Balearic Islands in Spain earlier in the week.
Spain experienced severe weather on Monday, with rains and wind gusts of up to 62 mph. As a result, flights were delayed, causing concern among travelers.
Vacationers from popular destinations such as Palma, Barcelona, Granada, Ibiza, Paris, and London Gatwick faced significant delays as flights were frequently delayed or canceled.
Orange weather warnings covered all of Spain as heavy rains inundated the country.

The office urged the public to 'exercise extreme caution.'
A spokesperson also assured that 'the situation is being constantly monitored and all necessary precautions are being coordinated.'
Other warnings included calls for citizens to 'avoid traveling by car unless absolutely necessary.'
“If you must leave, the government asks you to reduce speed, maintain distance, and use highways and main roads,” the statement said.
“In poor visibility, it is recommended to pull over your vehicle and signal your location.”
Weather in Spain
Spain has faced heavy rains and flash floods over the last 24 hours as the elements have caused widespread chaos.
The downpour forced people to seek refuge in Valencia, as a powerful storm struck a shopping mall yesterday afternoon.
An employee filmed as a palm tree snapped under the wind's assault in Alicante.
The storm comes after Severe Weather Europe warned of 'extremely high precipitation' in three areas of the north-central Mediterranean region.
Many areas of Spain, including Alicante, were marked with orange and yellow warnings on Monday due to heavy rain and gusts of wind.
A red warning was also issued on Monday for southern coastal and maritime areas of Tarragona due to the downpour.
The rain shows no signs of slowing down, with another 90 mm expected by Wednesday.
At Palma airport, at least 79 flights were canceled, and there were numerous delays, with nine flights redirected to other destinations.
Ibiza faced 20 cancellations and two redirects, while Menorca, which initially avoided the storm, began experiencing delays on Tuesday evening.
The storm also caused power outages in Capdepera and damaged phone lines in Malgrat.
Emergency services remain on high alert as the islands brace for further tidal impacts.
Additionally, people are urged 'not to enter areas prone to flooding.'
“Even if it looks like there is only a little water – even at low height cars can float and are easily swept away,” they added.
“If your car starts to float and is being swept away, exit immediately.
If that cannot be done through the doors, use a window.”
Drivers are urged to 'leave their vehicles and head to higher ground' if they find themselves in a flood-prone area, and also advised to have charged phones and sufficient fuel in their cars.

Some of the most famous tourist spots on the island of Bali also experienced flooding – tropical rains caused serious damage.
The downpour began on Tuesday night and lasted until Wednesday, leading to the collapse of two buildings in the island's capital, Denpasar.
Four people died as a result of the building collapses, and several main roads remain blocked.
Videos posted on social media show cars floating down streets and rivers overflowing with water.
The flood submerged entire streets, with locals attempting to wade through water up to their chests.
In total, four regions of the island experienced severe disruptions due to the natural disasters.
