At EU Council, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Urges Decisive European Action: Key Outcomes from Cyprus Talks.
Ukraine Joins Informal EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
According to UATV: On May 27, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha took part in an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers held in Limassol, Cyprus. The discussions centered on critical topics, including how to strengthen Europe’s role in peace initiatives and Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership.
Sybiha called for the opening of all six negotiation clusters for Ukraine this June, stressing that Europe must act boldly given the current circumstances.
“The time has come to play this card. As the dynamics of the war shift and Ukraine’s asymmetric strategy delivers results, Europe must now act decisively to bring peace closer—complementing the main U.S.-led negotiation track,” - Andrii Sybiha
He also emphasized that a clear mandate is essential for successful peace efforts—one that reflects a unified European voice.
“We don’t need to start by selecting a person or group to lead these efforts. What we need is a clearly defined mandate—and that mandate must represent a single European voice. Europe has the tools to achieve tangible results, above all sanctions and frozen Russian assets,” - Andrii Sybiha
Why This Meeting Matters for EU-Ukraine Cooperation
The session marked a significant step in shaping EU policy toward Ukraine and exploring ways to deepen cooperation amid current challenges.
Sybiha’s remarks at the informal EU meeting highlight Ukraine’s intensified push for European integration, especially as the war continues. Unlocking the negotiation clusters could accelerate Ukraine’s EU accession process, which in turn would bolster regional security and stability. Establishing a unified European mandate for peace efforts is crucial for achieving consensus and effectiveness in any talks with Russia.
