According to UATV: On May 27, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with his Dutch counterpart Tom Berendsen during an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers in Cyprus. The conversation centered on Ukraine’s European integration path and the peace efforts supporting that goal.

The meeting took place in Limassol, where both officials stressed the need to launch the first negotiating cluster—Fundamentals—for Ukraine’s entry into the European Union. Sybiha underscored the significance of this step, stating:

'Our shared objective is to genuinely kickstart Ukraine’s EU accession process—by beginning the technical procedures to open Cluster 1: Fundamentals. And our joint position is clear: the time for this is now.' Andrii Sybiha

This dialogue marks a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s European aspirations, with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to advancing cooperation on this front.

Strategic importance of the meeting

The meeting carries strategic weight for Ukraine, which is seeking deeper integration into European structures in response to ongoing challenges. Opening the Fundamentals cluster could serve as a critical step toward strengthening Ukraine’s political and economic ties with the EU, thereby contributing to regional stability and development.

Collaboration between Ukraine and EU member states in this area may have lasting implications for European security and the broader geopolitical landscape.
