Ukraine Urges Allies to Follow Belgium's Lead in Countering Russia's Shadow Fleet.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha's Appeal
According to UATV: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on international partners to emulate Belgium's recent actions in confronting Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet.' This appeal follows Belgium's seizure of a tanker linked to this clandestine maritime network. Sybiha expressed gratitude to the Belgian government and to Maxim Prévot for their decisive move, which underscores the critical importance of collective action in bolstering European security. These shadow fleets are used to circumvent international sanctions on Russian oil.
Sybiha stated that
"Once again, Belgium is demonstrating leadership in strengthening Europe's security,"and urged all partners to take firm action against the Russian shadow fleet. He noted the support for such operations from G7 nations, Nordic countries, and Baltic states. In a related development, Denmark has detained a shadow fleet vessel named the Nora, signaling growing international momentum to counter this threat.
The Need for Coordinated Action
Sybiha's statement highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts among nations to combat the novel forms of aggression employed by Russia. The recent seizures of tankers and vessels tied to the shadow fleet demonstrate an increasing readiness among European countries for joint action, which could significantly impact regional security. This collective stance may also serve as a signal to other nations about the necessity of intensifying measures to counter such hybrid threats.
