Sikorski named the condition under which Poland could shoot down RF missiles and drones over Ukraine.
Poland has the right to shoot down Russian aerial targets over Ukraine
On September 7, 2024, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed his opinion regarding Poland’s potential right to shoot down Russian aerial targets over Ukrainian territory. According to him, such an action could be justified in the event of a threat to Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
He stated this in an interview with the BBC.
Imagine that one of the Russian drones or missiles veers off course and flies not to Poland or Romania, as has happened before, but hits one of Ukraine's nuclear power plants. I believe that we should help Ukraine protect its NPPs from such wayward Russian missiles.
The minister emphasized that this is his personal opinion, not the official position of the government. He added that from a legal point of view, Poland would have the right to self-defense in such a situation, but no specific decisions have been made on this issue.
Additionally, it was previously reported that Poland is discussing the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine. Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski disclosed the details.
