Symbol of strength, faith, and resilience. Kharkiv celebrates City Day.
Today, August 23, Kharkiv celebrates City Day. City Mayor Igor Terekhov congratulated Kharkiv residents on the holiday. He noted that, although the city should have been celebrating if it were not for the war, the enemy will never be able to destroy the most important thing - the faith of Kharkiv residents in victory. Terekhov noted that Kharkiv is not just buildings, but people who fight and build their city in their hearts.
Due to the constant danger of shelling, no festive events are planned for City Day this year. It is also worth mentioning that Kharkiv is one of the largest cities in eastern Ukraine, known for its scientific, industrial, medical, political, and cultural achievements.
History of the city of Kharkiv
There are several versions about the age of the city of Kharkiv. Some scientists believe that it is about 350 years old, while others claim it is over 1500 years old. Archaeological finds indicate that there was a settlement at the site of modern Kharkiv as far back as the Bronze Age. The first documented mentions of Kharkiv date back to 1654, when the construction of the fortress began to protect against the Tatars.
By 1724, Kharkiv already had 61 streets and 1300 courtyards. The population grew from 1800 to 1917. During World War II, the city was occupied, but on August 23, 1943, it was liberated. The war caused significant damage to the city, but Kharkiv continues to be strong and resilient.
Today, Kharkiv has suffered from Russian aggression, but Kharkiv residents resist the enemy every day and believe in Ukraine's victory. On July 26, new street names were approved in Kharkiv, but this caused a scandal.
