Bradley Wiggins destroyed awards in front of children: What led the champion to do so.
Sad memories of Bradley Wiggins
According to The Sun: Bradley Wiggins recounted the painful moment he destroyed his highest awards in front of his angry children.
The famous cyclist shared his struggle with cocaine addiction, which led to his marriage breakdown and seriously threatened his life.
PA:Press Association GettyWiggins, 45 years old, became the first Briton to win the Tour de France in 2012 and won gold at the London Olympics the same year.
In 2013, he was awarded the Sports Personality of the Year title, followed by a knighthood. But drugs destroyed his happiness, and by 2024, he faced bankruptcy.
He found himself in a very difficult situation, ranging from living in a car or on benches in Clapham Common to being involved with a drug cartel in Middlesbrough.
A shocking moment occurred when he smashed the SPOTY award and his knighthood in front of his children, 20-year-old Ben and 19-year-old Bella.
"I was angry when I broke my 2012 award and my knighthood: 'This is not an achievement.'"
He added: "The desecration of my Olympic medal could have happened out of their sight, but it also feels sad to think about it."
"Hundreds of thousands of people cheered for me, millions watched from home. And here I am in the cupboard, sniffing cocaine [from my gold medal], mocking achievements, hating them for making me believe they brought me what I have."
Comments on successes and issues in Team Sky
Wiggins' comments about Sky
Wiggins explains that he wants to leave the scandals at the end of his career, which are related to doping, behind him. He claims he is not to blame and assures: "There was more in Team Sky."
He added: "This will be published."
Two independent investigations failed to confirm the contents of the medical package that Wiggins received on the last day of the Critérium du Dauphiné 2011, which he won.
The Sky team doctor, Richard Freeman, received a four-year ban for his role in ordering banned substances for British cycling in the same year.
Wiggins has been on the road to recovery for a year after being convinced by his friend and former cyclist Lance Armstrong to undergo rehabilitation.
He has good relationships with Ben and Bella, as well as with his ex-wife Kat.
Currently, he is in a relationship with an American woman and lives quite close to the mother of his five-year-old daughter to take her to school every day.
Wiggins, who is already seen as a symbol of victories and defeats, continues to fight personal demons. His story serves as a reminder of how fragile the happiness of sporting stars is and how easily everything can be lost to addictions. Today, on the path to recovery, he strives to find a new way not only in life but also in regard to the successes that once brought joy and now — pain.Read also
