Audiobooks in Ukraine cost thousands of dollars: how much publishers earn.
The audiobook market is blooming, and competition among publishers and content developers is becoming increasingly intense. The costs of creating audiobooks are significant, requiring serious investments.
How much does one audiobook cost
According to Forbes Ukraine, the company 'Abuk' adds 8-10 books to its library every month. Their business model became profitable in 2023, but the cost of creating each audiobook remains rather expensive, averaging 1,500-2,000 dollars. In the case of a multi-voice format, the price can reach 10,000-15,000 dollars, with production time up to six months.
The cost of content includes payment for the narrator, sound engineering work, costs for editing and administration, as well as royalties to rights holders, which can range from 15% to 70%. Despite high expenses, the company's profit increased eightfold from 2020 to 2024, reaching 24.9 million hryvnias.
'40% of the content is created by other studios or publishers. The audiobook library of 'Abuk' has over 800 books. This direction generates about 80% of the platform's sales, or approximately 20 million hryvnias.'
How to reduce production costs
One option is the use of artificial intelligence for voice-over, which was attempted by Librarius in May 2025. However, the preference is given to a live narrator for their ability to convey more emotions and provide quality sound, which is important for listeners. Additionally, AI error correction requires more time.
To maintain competitiveness, market players should implement various formats and improve the product. For example, 'Abuk' is considering a subscription model so that the audience pays monthly instead of making individual purchases. This could be advantageous for listeners, but not all authors and publishers are willing to agree to such terms.
The Ukrainian audiobook market is gaining momentum, attracting attention from both market participants and the audience. Attempts to optimize audiobook production, particularly through the use of artificial intelligence, demonstrate rapid industry development. However, the importance of quality content and flexibility in approach ensure market saturation and growing consumer interest.
