Recently, Bender received a horrific rape threat via Instagram. She shared a screenshot of the message in her Instagram story, adding:
“Blocked and reported.”
The disgusting message included denials and threats directed at Bender in front of her children.
In her next post, the presenter noted:
“Well, what can I say? Thanks for all your messages including those who say he should be reported to the police.”
She also emphasized:
“The sad part is I don’t really bat an eyelid, many of you are shocked, outraged, angry, sad, but for my female colleagues we know this is pretty common place.”
Bender stressed that women in media often face such experiences and called for changes in social media systems to ensure their safety.
“You should be verified and accountable.”
She also expressed concern that she might become 'immune' to moral standards due to constant assaults.
“Anyway, don’t worry about me I’m absolutely fine. And thanks 99% of my followers on here are awesome. The rest can **** off.”
Resilience in the profession
In 2020, Bender already spoke about her path in the male-dominated world of football, noting that she had to work harder than others.
“It meant I had to work harder. I basically put myself through a degree in football.”
She explained that she approached her duties with maximum responsibility:
“When I was covering the Champions League, instead of just relying on my knowledge I’d go and research every single Champions League game that ever existed because I was so afraid I would miss something.”
Bender also shared an experience when she was 'shut out' during a Real Madrid training session. She felt the gazes of those around her as she handed out her number to contacts.
This situation highlights the significant issue of gender discrimination and aggression faced by women in media, particularly in sports journalism. The threats Bender receives demonstrate the need for protection of women in this field as well as reforms in social media policies regarding user safety. It is important for cases like hers to serve as a catalyst for measures to improve the situation for women in the profession.
